These old cigarette ads are funny and yet, not! These were back in the day when the dangers of cigarette smoking was not well known and it was considered "hip" and "cool" to smoke. Teenagers began to smoke in those days almost as soon as they were old enough to sneak a cigarette or two out of mom or dad's pack!
Just look at former President Ronald Reagan, with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, surrounded by cartons of "the beautiful Christmas-card carton" of Chesterfields! I believe his family today would be mortified to see these old ads. Many celebrities of the day associated themselves with the advertising of cigarettes, allowing their pictures on packs, in ads.
Notice the price of the black and white 1916 ad, ten cents for a pack ... that would be $1.00 a carton!!
Enjoy, free to use as you please and, above all, be sweet!
